Is God Just Another Word for Love?

Is God just another word for Love?

In my own search for truth and meaning, I am captivated by science which frankly fills me with amazement and awe. I am reassured that the scientific method is based on observation and objective verification. In science I find both truth and meaning. This is how things are, really, I say. And then when I try to contemplate what we might mean by “God” as a source, force outside of what is observable and verifiable, I get stuck. How can I find truth and meaning in God if I apply a scientific approach? I can’t. So I have turned to LOVE as a common denominator. Religions say that God is love and we are to discover God in us by ever opening our hearts to love. Love one another. The mystics of all traditions merge into a union of love they call divine and human as well. And similarly, I do find meaning and truth in the growth of my experience of love. Is my growing love observable and verifiable by scientific methods? Not really. Is it true and meaningful? Yes. So, I think, if I can believe in my growing love, I can make space for others to believe in their loving God. Maybe God is just another word for love. How wonderful as Unitarian Universalists that we are free to use either one or both in our search for truth and meaning.
