Summer Schedule One Service 10 AM

Sunday - 5 July - Autonomy and Acculturation - Rev. Jamestone

Music – This summer our wonderful Music Associate, John Jesensky, will spend his final Sundays with us presenting music that is thoughtful, enchanting, deeply moving, fanciful -- in short, varied in many ways that enhance the services and move the heart.  On occasion other musicians may join him, but most often it will just be John at the piano working his artistry.

These past few years we have grown accustomed to hearing music that deepens and transforms services in ways that only music can achieve. Join us this summer and let yourself be enriched.

Modeling Relaxation

So, now what do I do? – This might have been the thought of our own Susan Huntington as she found herself in the hospital for a presumed heart attack that turned out to be a special form of an anxiety or stress attack.

While others might have been content to accept the standard scientific, evidence based allopathic medicine -  take one of these prescriptions and see if that helps.  This approach arises from the kind of background educational approach Susan, as an physicians assistant, had carefully learned. She chose to see if it were possible to treat her high blood pressure and related stress by addressing root causes.

This led her into the study of alternative medical approaches known as Mind Body Spirit Therapies include meditation, exercise, body therapies such as Yoga and Tai Chi, autogenic therapy (also known as repetitive positive self-talk), biofeedback, guided imagery, journaling, prayer and other spiritual practices.

In her sermon on June 28th she describes what she, initially a skeptic, learned of these therapies and how they have been tested by standard medical approaches and found successful in addressing various stress-related issues. Of note, these therapies concentrate on attaining optimal health in contrast to seeking absence of disease or only treating disease symptoms when they present themselves, as is frequently the case with traditional medicine.

Today, some of these approaches are linked to standard medical practice as the mind is understood to be perhaps the most important organ and accessing its influence over the other parts of the body is essential to good health and reducing stress, at the very least.  Further, spirituality and its practices may access stress reduction through mind body synergy.

Editor's note: For those who might be interested in the biofeedback equipment Susan mentioned, it is called “emwave.”  It has various products – including one specifically for sleep. The one referenced in the sermon is the emWave Personal Stress Reliever, which  comes with the Coherence Coach™ CD, an entertaining stress relief software application that teaches HeartMath's Quick Coherence® technique for stress relief and increasing performance. Step-by-step, through narration, animations and music, the Coherence Coach gives you the stress relief training to increase coherence levels while using your emWave.

This book by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows tells the story of how residents of this small island cope with German occupation during the war. We urge all of you to read it and be part of the discussion. Enjoy! We look forward to seeing you in the fall. - The Alliance
