REflections on Children's Programming -

"Helping a child cope with loss is perhaps one of the most important roles an adult can play. In effect, you are helping that child develop skills that can last a lifetime."
~Mental Health Association

Just as adults struggle to understand tragedy in the world, so do our children.  If you need assistance or support in this effort, please contact the Director of Religious Education, Gail M. Syring at: dre(at symbol)ushartford.com or 860-233-9897. Written resources can also be found here:

Perennial Wisdom
Skip Berrien joins us in Religious Education class today, to speak about the surprising pleasures to be found on vacation.  What do you do with no T.V., computer or Game Boy? We will be experimenting with collage after the story.

Zen Master as Pulpit Guest on August 10th - Zen Master Dae Bong Sunim, of the international Zen center Mu Sang Sa in Korea, will be joining us as a pulpit guest on August 10, 2008.   He will offer his thoughts on the sixth principle, the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all in his sermon: Zen Action, Zen Person. His biography and information about Mu Sang Sa can be viewed here.

Knoxville Relief Fund - As we struggle to make sense of a tragedy in our sister congregation, it can be helpful to be able to make a meaningful contribution to the healing efforts.  To this end, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), in association with the UUA Thomas Jefferson District, has launched the Knoxville Relief Fund to bring ministry, spiritual care, and practical financial assistance to those affected by the tragedy in Knoxville, Tennessee. Gifts to the fund will assist members of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church and Westside Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and their loved ones, and will show them that they are not alone during this time of shock and grief More.

Cranes for Knoxville
Volunteer at the USH Office

Knoxville - Months or years from now, somebody will stumble upon this page, long after the relevant web links have been replaced and wonder, "What's this business about Knoxville?"

In short, a deranged man entered a UU Church while the members were observing a children's pageant. The man was armed intent on killing as many as possible and convinced he would be subsequently killed by the police. He killed two, wounded several and was subdued by members of the congregation. They held him for the arrival of the police. You can read more about the incident by following links elsewhere in this issue while they are current or using Google to find relevant news stories.

What are the lessons of this incident? - DCN

Cranes for Knoxville - Come to a "Crane Workshop" this Sunday, August 3.

Leona will provide ongoing instruction for all ages in the Meditation Room this Sunday, August 3, 9 - 10 AM and 12 noon - 2 PM.

Materials will be available on an ongoing basis.

Once one-thousand cranes are completed, they will be sent to Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville as a symbol of our wish for their peace.

To learn more about the crane's story of peace & longevity, go to www.sadako.org (this reference seems to be acting oddly. If it fails, try this one: here or here )
